It is temporary, necessary and beneficial \u2014 it is what allows the muscle to repair and adapt after a hard training session.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chronic low-grade inflammation:<\/strong> It is an inflammatory response maintained over time, of low intensity but constant. It does not hurt nor is it directly noticeable, but it progressively deteriorates the tissues and is at the origin of multiple metabolic and degenerative diseases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chronic inflammation appears mainly as a consequence of <strong>physical inactivity, poor diet and excess adipose tissue<\/strong>. In people who are overweight or obese, fat tissue itself becomes a continuous source of pro-inflammatory cytokines\u2014especially interleukin-1 (IL-1) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-\u03b1)\u2014that keep the body in a state of permanent inflammatory alert.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For an athlete, this has direct consequences: worse recovery between sessions, greater risk of injury, less adaptive response to training and, in the long term, greater risk of developing pathologies that shorten sporting life.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How exercise acts as an anti-inflammatory: the key mechanisms<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exercise is not anti-inflammatory by chance. There are at least three well-documented mechanisms by which training actively reduces chronic inflammation:<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Reduction of inflammatory cell infiltration in adipose tissue<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the main sources of chronic inflammation is adipose tissue, where immune cells\u2014neutrophils, monocytes, and macrophages\u2014infiltrate and continuously produce pro-inflammatory cytokines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A study by Kawanishi and collaborators (2015) showed that exercise <strong>significantly reduces the infiltration of these cells into adipose tissue<\/strong> and decreases the expression of the monocyte chemotactic protein, which is responsible for recruiting and mobilizing these inflammatory cells to the tissue. However, recent research suggests that <strong>Strength training may have additional benefits<\/strong> for several reasons:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It generates greater muscle mass, which increases the body&#8217;s ability to chronically produce anti-inflammatory myokines.<\/li>\n<li>Improves body composition by reducing visceral adipose tissue, which is the main producer of pro-inflammatory cytokines.<\/li>\n<li>It produces neuromuscular adaptations that reduce mechanical stress on joints and tissues, reducing a common source of local inflammation in athletes.<\/li>\n<li>Counteracts sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass with age), which is in itself a pro-inflammatory factor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The combination of both types of training\u2014what is known as <strong>concurrent training<\/strong>\u2014 is probably the most effective strategy for reducing chronic inflammation and improving long-term metabolic health.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How much exercise does it take to obtain anti-inflammatory effects<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the most frequently asked questions is how much exercise is necessary to notice these effects.
